Proposed Surf Ranch proposed for Coolum
11 time world-champion surfer, Kelly Slater, is in a $1b bid to bring a surf stadium to Coolum on the Sunshine Coast! The WSL (World Surf League) wants to build an artificial wave pool and resort on a 510 hectare site at Coolum.
This wave pool would be the first outside of the United States for Kelly Slater, who built a $42million surf ranch at Lemoore in California in 2013. The site is 160km inland from the ocean.
The WSL acquired a majority stake in the Kelly Slater Wave Company in 2016 and has partnered with Queensland developer Don O’Rorke’s Consolidated Properties on the proposal.
The surf stadium would have a capacity for 20,000 spectators and would aim to draw major competitions and events, including world qualifiers, as well as catering to recreational surfers. The site would also include other facilities including a retail village, restaurants and an environmental education centre based on the site’s wetlands and nearby waterways.
With surfing making it’s Olympic Game debut in 2020, the surf stadium could give Queensland a push in it’s bid to host the 2032 Olympics.
